How was this funded?

The United States Fire Administration, a division of FEMA made fire prevention grants available to fire departments nationwide in 2004. The project proposed by the Washington Fire Company was selected for funding.

Our project outlined distributing a smoke detector to every household in Mechanicsburg Borough. Through this delivery and other activities the Washington Fire Company will be distributing 7,000 units to borough residents.

How to install or replace the battery

· Open the detector by gently prying off the cover

· Unclip the existing battery from its connection and retaining clip

· Clip the new battery firmly into place. Make sure it is put in the same way as the one removed, in other words, the (+) and (-) signs on the battery must match up with the (+) and (-) signs on the detector

Established in 1858 as a way to provide fire protection for our growing community the Washington Fire Company has been providing the highest level of protection possible for almost a century and a half. This tradition continues through our current operational readiness and projects like this.

Or services to the community include:

Fire Suppression: The WFC operates 2- engine/pumpers, 1-75 foot aerial unit and a heavy rescue unit. This apparatus is equipped with the latest fire suppression technology. Staffed with highly trained and very dedicated personnel several of which have obtained state firefighter certification

Rescue Services: In addition to local rescue response the WFC is an active component of the Cumberland County Technical Rescue Operations Team. This group responds to more advanced rescue scenarios regionally. We are also proud to have members actively participating with the Pennsylvania Task Force One Urban Search and Rescue Team allowing us to benefit from their advanced training and operational knowledge.

Public Education: Through our fire prevention education efforts over 2300 children in the local elementary schools and day cares receive instruction in fire safety and prevention annually. This program has been vastly expanded in 2005 to include this smoke detector campaign.
