On September 29, 2000 a fire at 147 East Main took the life of a borough resident.
Out of this incident stories of actions above the call of duty by a few of our firefighters began to surface.
Although the victim lost her fight later that night the actions of those individuals that night are still just as valorous.
Several individuals entered the building through the front door to attempt a rescue of the female resident believed to still be on the third floor. Within moments a swiftly deteriorating fire condition developed on the second floor. The entire contents of a fully involved apartment vented out the door and down the hall pinning these men to the floor with the stair to the third floor just out of reach. Knowing a victim was still on the floor above these gentlemen refused to be pushed back, choosing to make several attempts to reach the third floor stairs with out thought for their well being. After learning of the victims evacuation via a outside fire escape the same crew pushed the fire back into the apartment and extinguished it.
There has been many individual acts of bravery in the history of the Washington Fire Company. Many before us also laid it all on the line several times.
In a society which had lost is love affair with the fireman (until Sept 11, 2201) it is more important than ever that we recognize the accomplishments and sacrifices of our own.
On February 24, 2001 these gentlemen where honored with the presentation of the first ever Washington Fire Company Medals of Valor
